Confused.com Reveals Car Insurance Prices Rise By More Than 12% Year-On-Year

Confused.com has revealed that the price of car insurance has risen by more than 12% year on year.

According to the Confused.com/Towers Watson Car Insurance Price Index, drivers have been lumbered with an average year-on-year rise of 12.3% in the cost of comprehensive motor insurance cover – this equates to a£92 jump in just 12 months.

The biggest annual price hikes affect postcodes in the North of England. As of quarter three 2011, Bradford has suffered a 27.5% year-on-year rise in the cost of average comprehensive cover and Oldham has fared even worse with a 27.9% year-on-year increase. Liverpool and Manchester have also seen insurance prices driven up significantly as has the Ilford area of Essex.

Third party, fire and theft (TPFT) customers have not gone unscathed however, suffering an annual rise of 19.9%, equating to an increase of £192 over 12 months.

This rise of 12.3% year-on-year is especially significant when compared to the Consumer Price Index – a measure of inflation – which currently stands at 4.5%, making the rises in car insurance prices almost three times as high as inflation in the UK. The national average comprehensive car insurance premium currently stands at£843.

Top five UK areas with the highest annual premium rises year-on-year, based on the Confused.com/Towers Watson Car Insurance Price Index are Oldham (27.9%), Bradford (27.5%), Liverpool (26.8%), Manchester(26.6%) and Ilford (23.7%).

The five UK areas with the lowest annual premium rises year-on-year include Perth (0.3%), Kirkwall (0.8%), Motherwell (2.2%), Dumfries (2.4%) and Edinburgh (2.5%).

Despite the year-on-year hikes, there is some good news for drivers as the average price of a comprehensive car insurance policy fell by 1.6% in the third quarter of 2011: the first quarterly decrease for over three years.

Car owners in the affected areas are going to have to be as savvy as ever to find the cheapest and best deals for them by shopping around.”

elephant.co.uk Reveals Scottish Drivers Like To Make It Personal

Motorists living in Scotland are the most likely to own a personalised numberplate new research by elephant.co.uk has revealed. And the plates are odds-on to be seen adorning the bumpers of luxury cars such as Bentleys, Ferraris and Aston Martins.

Car insurance specialist elephant.co.uk looked at 3.5 million policies and found that of the top 10 postcodes where personalised plates are popular, eight are in Scotland, with the affluent settlement of Kilmacolm in Inverclyde at the top of the list. 14% of drivers there own a personalised plate compared to a national average of 4%.

In second place we move to the other end of the country to the millionaire’s playground of Sandbanks in Dorset (13%), but then in third place it’s back up north with the prosperous Glasgow commuter area of Newton Mearns (12%). Also in the top 10 are a number of postcodes in and around Aberdeen, with North Ferriby in Humberside joining Sandbanks as the only other location outside of Scotland.

Brian Martin, managing director of elephant.co.uk, said: “Considering the affluent areas around the country where we see the highest proportion of personalised number plates, it certainly looks like they’re used as a status symbol.

“However, it’s hard to say why they’re so popular in Scotland specifically. Maybe Scottish motorists look to express their individuality more than those in the rest of the UK.”

When it comes to what cars the personalised plates appear on, it’s perhaps no surprise that owners of luxury models are the most likely to splash out on them. In fact, the whole top 10 list is made up of prestige motors. Most popular is the Bentley Continental, with 36% carrying a personalised plate. This is followed by the Ferrari 360 and Aston Martin DB7 (both on 35%).

Brian continued: “It wasn’t a surprise to see that prestige models dominate the list, however, it was surprising to see that such a large number of Bentley Continental, Ferrari 360 and Aston Martin DB7 owners splash out on personalised plates. Drivers of those cars definitely want to stand out from the crowd.”

When it comes to occupations, elephant.co.uk found that Company Chairmen are head and shoulders above the rest with 16% owning one, followed by Bank Directors on 12% and Property Developers on 11%.

elephant.co.uk also looked at those areas, occupations and vehicles with the lowest percentage of personalised plates. The Hilborough and Northwold area near Thetford, Norfolk was revealed as the area of the UK with the lowest percentage of cars with personalised numberplates, croupiers were the occupation at the bottom of the list whilst the Suzuki Liana is the vehicle least likely to have one attached to it.

elephant.co.uk has revealed that although for most of the working population, the weekend is a period of rest, the same cannot be said for car thieves, as new research shows that they’re at their most active over the weekend.

The research, carried out by car insurance specialist elephant.co.uk, shows the day of the week most cars are stolen is a Saturday while the day most items are taken from cars is a Sunday.

elephant.co.uk looked at 45,000 theft claims over the last 5 years to see on which day most car crime took place. While Saturday was the most popular day for vehicle theft claims, it was closely followed by Friday, Thursday, Monday, Sunday, Wednesday and then finally Tuesday. Additionally, Sunday was the most popular day for theft from vehicle claims, then followed by Tuesday, Saturday, Monday, Thursday, Wednesday and Friday.

Brian Martin, elephant.co.uk managing director, commented: “The last thing you need after a hard week’s work is for your car to be stolen or broken into so this research will make unhappy reading for motorists. With most people out and about at the weekend, there’s a likelihood they’re leaving their cars unattended either in a car park or at home which could tempt thieves to make their move.”

But what exactly are criminals stealing from cars? Over the past 5 years, the most common items have been Sat Navs followed by CDs and stereos. In fact, these three items are all more than twice as likely to be stolen as anything else.

The full list of the items most likely to be stolen from cars also includes iPods/MP3 players, sunglasses, mobile phones, clothes, computers, child car seats and cameras.

Brian continued: “Car thieves are opportunist, and too many motorists present them with an opportunity by leaving valuable items on show, or even leaving their windows open. Motorists need to remember not to make themselves an easy target.”

elephant.co.uk has revealed that while many men like to think they are the superior gender when it comes to driving, new research from the car insurance specialist shows men have bigger crashes that cost more money than women.

elephant.co.uk looked at more than 200,000 claims and found young men in particular have more expensive crashes. Accidents involving men aged under 25 cost on average 15% more than those involving women of the same age. In fact, the cost of accidents involving male drivers of all ages is 6% higher than accidents involving women.

LV= Reports Kids Come First As Parents Increase ‘Back To School’ Spending To £709 Million

LV=’s new Cost of a Child study has found that parents will spend £709 million* on ‘back to school’ basics including uniforms, stationery, sportswear and winter coats as parents prepare to kit their children out for the start of the new school year. This is equivalent to parents spending an average of £122 on their children. This rises to£139 for secondary school aged children, compared to £96 for infants. Parents living in London spend the most preparing for their kids to go back to school at £158 on average.

Despite many families continuing to feel the squeeze in the current economic climate, 46% of parents expect to spend a greater amount this year on ‘back to school’ items than last year. When asked to consider the financial pressures of kitting their kids out for school, 48% said they are feeling the strain of having to spend ‘excessive amounts’, rising to 64% among parents in the North East.

54% parents are considering using low cost suppliers for back to school items, such as supermarkets to buy basics like uniform and stationery, and 23% are considering second hand items, including hand-me-downs and goods from charity shops or eBay. This rises to 70% and 41% respectively for families in the South East.

Mark Jones, LV= head of protection, said: “It is surprising that many parents are responding to increased money pressure this year by spending more on back to school basics; clearly kids come first despite the downturn. And it’s even more surprising that many parents are spending more despite looking at ways to be frugal and economise, by purchasing from cheaper suppliers such as their local supermarket or eBay.”

The annual LV= Cost of a Child study shows that parents are now likely to have to shell out more than £201,000 on raising a child from birth to the age of 21**. This equates to £9,610 a year, £800 a month or £26 a day. Education (not including private school fees) remains the second biggest expenditure behind childcare, costing parents £52,881 over a child’s lifetime – an increase of 4% on last year.

LV= Research Reveals Importance Of A Good Claims Service

LV= research has revealed that 83% of people interviewed who had made a claim on their car insurance said they would pay more for their insurance cover if they had the assurance of a good claims service. However with many people buying insurance just based on the very cheapest price, LV= is warning consumers not to forgo quality just to save a few pounds.

Peter Horton, operations director for the LV= general insurance business said: “Many people are understandably looking to make savings and cutbacks on their insurance at the moment, so they might be tempted to buy a policy from the insurer offering absolutely the cheapest quote. However the danger is that they may save themselves a few pounds in the short term but end up seriously out of pocket if that insurer offers a substandard claims service.”

LV= operates an award winning claims service and so far this year has received two more accolades for its service, including a Consumer Intelligence Gold rating.

The latest Gold Award is based on Consumer Intelligence research among over 2,000 people who made a claim on their motor insurance in 2008.

People were asked to rate their overall satisfaction with the service they received from their provider and give their views on specific elements of the claims service, including courtesy cars, repair quality and levels of communication.

The award comes hot on the heels of a Which? Magazine’s People’s Choice award received by LV= last month.

The People’s Choice accolade is awarded to the best financial service providers across a number of categories as voted for by 15,000 Which? members.
