M&S Money Goes Back To The Future To Compare Student Bedrooms

The average student crams into their room almost £699 worth of electrical gadgets and appliances, £444 worth of clothes, sports equipment valued at £246 and textbooks worth £231, according to the poll by M&S Money*.

The huge value of a student’s bedroom is not surprising, with over half of students (55%) owning a laptop, 48% possessing a MP3 player and 20% a widescreen television.

But students’ expensive tastes are nothing new as the survey also revealed what the typical university bedroom of 1985 looked like.

While today’s students listen to music through their MP3 player and stereo, students in 1985 enjoyed the sounds of Wham and Tears for Fears through their Walkman, ghetto blaster and turntable.

In the same year that ‘Back to the Future’ hit the big screens, the students of 1985 were watching the first episodes of Eastenders on their black and white TVs.

The 1985 student bedroom was also likely to contain an alarm clock, scientific calculator, Breville toaster, and even a landline phone for the lucky few.

The survey also revealed that only 8% of the 1985 students said they were burgled while at university, compared to 27% of current students.

Andrew Ferguson, M&S Head of General Insurance, said: “While the contents of a student’s bedroom have changed a great deal in the past 25 years, one thing remains the same – they have expensive tastes.

“Our survey shows the modern day student bedroom is a goldmine for thieves, so insurance could be the best investment students make this autumn.”

The survey was carried out to mark the 25th anniversary of the launch of the financial services arm of M&S**, today known as M&S Money.

M&S Insurance Scoops Industry Awards

M&S Money has been named ‘most trusted motor insurance provider’ and ‘best travel insurance provider for service’ at the 2010 Moneywise Customer Service Awards.

M&S Insurance Scoops Industry Awards

The award winners results follow the largest dedicated customer service survey held in the UK and were presented in front of 270 guests and industry leaders at a black-tie gala in the City of London. From January to March 2010 more than 10,000 responses were received via Moneywise magazine and Moneywise.co.uk which were then carefully analysed by CoreData Research. This information was used to identify those companies, which offer the best service and those, which are most trusted to provide these services, according to the British public.

M&S Money was also highly commended in the ‘most trusted travel insurance provider’ and ‘best motor insurance provider for service’ categories.

Colin Kersley, M&S Money Chief Executive, said: “All our insurance policies are designed with the M&S customer in mind, and we are delighted that M&S Car and Travel Insurance have been recognised at the Moneywise awards.”

M&S Premier Car Insurance protects the policy holder, not just their car, and includes RAC breakdown cover, motor legal protection and a hire car for up to 14 days (breakdown cover provided by RAC for M&S customers and is not available directly from RAC.co.uk).

M&S Money travel insurance offers single trip or annual multi-trip cover. The independent traveller section of the policy* helps customers who choose to travel independently and may not benefit from the protection provided via a package tour. This year M&S Money helped travel insurance customers who were affected by the volcanic ash which grounded flights.

Molly Is The New Face Of M&S Pet Insurance

A beagle from South Wales is to become the new face of M&S Pet Insurance after winning a national competition to find a cat or dog with true star quality to feature in a future marketing campaign.

To enter the competition, which ran from April until the start of June, M&S pet insurance customers were asked to simply submit a photo and a few words about why their cat or dog is a star. Following the huge response to the competition and after some close deliberation by the judges, five-month-old Molly, who lives with The Mainwaring family in Blackwood, Gwent, was named the M&S Pet Star contest top-dog.

This means that Molly will now have a professional photo shoot and be featured in promotional material for a forthcoming M&S Pet Insurance campaign. The Mainwaring family will receive £100 worth of M&S vouchers. Sian Mainwaring said: “Molly is very mischievous and certainly has a mind of her own but we forgive her anything – most of the time. She means so much to us and it is wonderful that she will now be the face of M&S Pet Insurance.”

Amanda Newman, M&S Head of Marketing, said: “The huge response to the competition illustrates the fact that we are a nation of cat and dog lovers. It was wonderful to spend time looking through all the photos and reading why the cats and dogs mean so much to their owners.”

M&S Money, Pet Insurance Provider, Warns Pet Owners Who Cut Back On Regular Treatments For Their Animals Will Increase The Risk Of Expensive Vet Bills In The Long-Term

As Spring arrives, M&S Money is highlighting that animal lovers can reduce the risk of their pets suffering from common conditions, such as dental disease and worms, by investing in regular, affordable treatments. For example, a single treatment to reduce the risk of fleas in household pets costs around £4. A vet bill to treat fleas can reach as much as £2,000 in severe cases.

Judith Roberts, M&S Insurance Manager, said: “Responsible pet owners know that regular treatments can help to reduce the likelihood of their pets suffering from common conditions. However, purchasing all the recommended medication can be expensive, particularly at this time. M&S Pet Insurance customers are turning to Bestpet to reduce the cost of these treatments and ensure their pets remain happy and healthy.”

M&S Pet Insurance has joined with the online pharmacy, Bestpet.co.uk, which already sells pet medication costing up to 50% less than buying at the vets, to help reduce the costs for pet-owners, with a further 5% discount on prescription and non-prescription drugs as well as pet foods.

Pet owners are also reminded that most insurance policies will not cover the cost of treating any illness that their pet should have been vaccinated against.

John Darlington of Bestpet Pharmacy said: “Even if a pet is insured they need to be treated regularly to prevent suffering and avoid potential claims as well as possible premium increases. Simple worming and flea treatment regimes can protect the pet from infestation. We are now approaching the high season for these ailments.”
